Wieso die neuen Win SPs nutzen? Lieber Server 2008

"Windows Server 2008 is the best OS to be released till date from Microsoft's stable. And the moment I got hold of the RTM build I could not resist installing it on my workstation. Due to the nature of my work I always prefer running a Server OS on my main workstation... I have been running Windows 2003 disguised as XP (with all the themes and stuff) all these days," revealed Vijayshinva Karnure, from Microsoft in India.

Windows Server 2008 does come complete with the Windows Aero graphical user interface. But for this, you will need the necessary drivers. At least in theory, the Vista Graphics and Audio drivers will also fit Windows Server 2008, if the server OS is not supported specifically by the hardware manufacturers.

Tune Windows Server 2008 SP1 to Boost Performance

Even from the beta development milestones of Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 1, Microsoft has applauded the delivery of a superior level of performance when compared with the predecessor server operating system to come out of Redmond, Windows Server 2003. In fact, as Microsoft slowly transitioned its entire server infrastructure, with the exception of a single box, to Windows Server 2008 SP1, upgrading from Windows Server 2003 to an unfinished platform, still in beta, the stress was placed on improved performance in a variety of scenarios from transfer to file sharing. This aspect of Windows Server 2008 has fallen under the responsibility of the Windows Server performance team.

Windows Server 2008 to Shame Windows Vista

With the simultaneous release to manufacturing of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 on February 4, 2008, Microsoft is sending out a clear message that its server and client platforms are joined at the hip. Further evidence of this is the fact that Windows Server 2008 is synchronized with Vista to the point where the RTM release of the server platform is labeled Service Pack 1, to match Vista SP1. But joined at the hip does not mean that the two products will share the same trajectory in terms of adoption. In fact, according to a recent survey put together by CDW Corporation, Windows Server 2008 uptake will shame Vista.

Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 Volume Activation 2.0 - Microsoft documentation available for download

Volume Activation 2.0 represents the evolution of the activation process associated with the Windows operating systems, both for the server and the client side. Initially introduced with Windows Vista at the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007, Volume Activation 2.0 is aimed at Microsoft's Volume Licensing customers, and not at the end users. In this manner, the Redmond company aimed to gain some level of control over what it referred to as the largest source of pirated copies of Windows – product keys for volume editions of previous releases of the operating system.
