Well,

With IDF (Intel Developer's Forum) underway... we have some very interesting news....

As reported by many... (links at the end...)

Basic Concepts
Produce a TERAFLOP of performance on a single chip
  • Consists of 80 Cores in an 8x10 grid.
  • Silicon is 22mm x 13.75mm
  • Target clock rate of 3.1GHz / Core
  • Data to be moved via on-chip interconnect fabric
  • Data to be stacked via SRAM attached directly to Bottm of the chip
  • Could this be the 32nm GESHER platform?

Now.. thats crunching power!

Sweat but still there are not many programs/games using advanteage of dual core processors :/

well, nothing unexpected

Intel, AMD always say that in futere bla, bla, bla
and sometimes it's funny coz it happens.

From what I have heard, most of the new games either have or will be taking advantage of the dual core processors. They would be stupid not to. I can guarantee that by next year we will be seeing quad core processors. AMD is already working on one for release.

this sort of studd will make cgi rendering farms go so hard they will prolly be able to creat movies special efects and render in realtime awesome

Well To clarify implications of an 80 Core processer..

The cores will most likely be RISC cores, as opposed to CISC cores which is the type of processor found in the current Intel/AMD dual/quad core processors.

Personally I am an AMD fan... however, my goal here is to provide a brief highlight of interesting up and coming developments. I'm sure I will have something from AMD/ATI as soon as something is announced.

Now.. on to the implications, since these are RISC Cores, the community that will benifi most is the Scientific / Research community. These will be in multi-processor systems... and supercomputers.
Looking bac at the ASIC Red type Supercomputer. Say we put 4000 nodes with 4 of each of these processors / node. You're talking 16000 Teraflops (Thats a HUGE number cruncher).

These processors would be used in things from military applications, to predicting weather.

If you'll wait to November they will sell 4-Cores CPU... then the 2-Core on will be much more cheaper!

another thing i think they are goin to need to get working to make this worthwhile is reverse hyperthreading so no multicore aware software can benefit from multicore processors

This would be amazing, however, I don't see it coming in 5 years. The size of the processor might be huge I suppose >_>

Intel will need to solve their bus issues before they start putting more then two cores on a chip. They already have a problem saturating their bandwidth and they only have 2, not to mention their 4 core is simply 2 dual cores slapped on a chip.

I saw some benchmarks if the software isnt threaded it doesnt matter if you have a billion cores its the same as one

Well, I would be more interested in cheaper cost effective CPU and components than these 8,16,32,64,80 cores bullshits. As far as I see it, I do not need that much processing power seeing how entry level cpus more than meet the average users' need already. Would be nice if these new fangled processor help to lower the price of existing products but AMD/Intel take the existing line off the market as soon as they can. Ah well, at least it does help in that it make the prior line cheaper and I can pick up a just phased out model for like USD50. Would be great if they keep the 2006 models around in 2010 so I can pick up a USD5 cpu hohohoho.
