thanks for the tip but i cant seem to find the "keep broken files" option. When i unrar the part.1 of the file it unzips tells me i need "volume 2", i hit cancel and there is no file in the unrared folder

if someone have problems with vlc
then there are also other ways to play rar files
an easy way is to use :
"Dziobas RAR Player 0.006"
it is a player made especially for that purpose .
(based on the Mplayer)

kmplayer and gomplayer do the same thing, except they have a way better ui.

does VLC play files when the beginning is missing?
I used AviPreview for ages, but it can't play files without beginning sectors.

Yeh VLC also works on .part files i believe in emule, .vob files (from dvd's) and will ask if you want repare broken video files (exceptions in codecs/bitrate anomily's etc) - Its a handy app for any multimedia freak

u have to right click on the part1, go to the menu item "Extract files..."->ther under the "General" tab in the "Miscellaneous" section check the "Keep broken files" option.
