Pirated DVD amnesty aims to shred discs

Owners of pirated DVDs in Edinburgh are being encouraged to take them to be shredded tomorrow as part of a national amnesty.

Retailers and their suppliers have organised the campaign to highlight the problem of DVD crime, and have set up a mobile shredding lorry to tour the country and help get rid of the discs.

According to new research, more people in Scotland have knowingly bought a pirate DVD than anywhere else in the UK.

Members of the public are now being encouraged to bring along their discs to be destroyed, and genuine DVDs will be given away throughout the day.

Trading Standards groups say DVD piracy is not a victimless crime, as sales support illegal activities such as drug dealing, people smuggling and benefit fraud.
