Rumors are a leapin' around Silicon Valley that Intel may end up laying off 16,000 people, and getting rid of a bunch of marketing initiatives, Viiv the unpronounceable being rumored to be one destined for the death knell. It's very AMD-ish.

While AMD is having Intel moments, and getting into Dell, and coming up with Pay As You Go PC services with Microsoft, and all kinds of fancy shmancy, idea driven things.

Here's the rub, it's AMD that has shown strong management skills in this instance, and Intel that is floundering. Possibly because Intel's executive nobility don't much like bowing to their kind, and would prefer it if they ruled in his stead. Possibly because AMD has shown the courage to loosen the ties it has to its plucky underdog past, and to act like a serious partner for corporations and OEMs.

The technology battle between the two has long paled into insignificance as both companies have tried to figure out what to do with a PC market that is not going to grow as it once did.

In this scenario, it is easier to fall from grace when you have lived off the fat of the land for so long, as Intel has, while AMD benefits from not taking anything for granted, and being hungrier.

If the rumors prove true for Intel, AMD has yet another opportunity to solidify its gains in the market, and to be more aggressive. We are witnessing a shift in power, and although it is hard to imagine Intel losing a significant amount of its monopoly, it is going to be tough for it to get back to its overtly dominant market position.

It's just like that time your dance instructor told you that at two hundred and fifty pounds you could ill afford to put all your hopes in dancing for the Bolshoi, for example, things just have to change.
