Der hochdekorierte Berufssoldat Tom Highway lässt sich nach langen Jahren in Korea und Vietnam als Ausbilder zu einer Einheit der Marine versetzen. Die Rekruten belächeln zunächst sein autoritäres Gehabe, lernen ihn aber schon bald fürchten. Erst während der Invasion in Grenada merken sie, dass sie dem gnadenlosen Schleifer viel zu verdanken haben...
