HD DVD and Blu-ray delayed by AACS anti-copy standard

If you'd have asked us last week -- as the AACS licensing authority was supposedly going to finalize the copy-protection standard -- whether we were all good to go with all the next-gen optical formats' peripheral standards, we'd have probably given you the nod. But, in fact, that's not the case; AACS (Advanced Access Content System), one of the many copy protection standards being folded into high definition discs, is holding up both standards, and so long as they're both committed to running with it, they're going to be delayed -- which would, in theory, take away Blu-ray's late-release handicap with HD DVD. Then again, maybe not; the AACS board is supposed to meet on the 23rd or 24th of this month, and apparently expects to have this all sorted out within as little as two to three weeks. Guess we'll have to wait and see on this one.

They can delay it as long as they want... I'm too busy copying regular DVDs to care about the new format ;)

After worries about Blu-ray and HD DVD being delayed due to the AACS final specs failing to reach an agreement, the negotiators have managed to reach agreement on Wednesday on an interim license for the AACS copy protection system after working very intensely on this. As a result, Blu-ray and HD DVD equipment manufacturers and disc replicators can now obtain the private encryption keys in order to use on discs and their players. Otherwise, HD DVD would have missed their late-March planned launch, not to mention a similar issue for the Blu-ray's planned launch in May.

HD DVD Blu-ray launched with unfinished AACS copy protection

Today, Heise Online is reporting that manufacturers of drives for HD DVD and Blu-ray discs still plan on a March launch date. This is even though the AACS copy protection is incomplete (Advanced Access Content System). The first devices will have an interim license according to Blu-ray manufacturers. These licenses will allow the drives to be upgraded with the necessary AACS keys before the specification is finished.
