Odds are you live within spitting distance of a public Wi-Fi hot spot. Whether it 's a coffee shop, airport or public library --- heck entire cities are starting to get in on the action.--- free Wi-Fi is a rising trend.
Being a starving college student, i could ditch my ISP, save some money for extra groceries... but is it safe ? NOPE !
So, this is how i get to have my cake & get to eat it too.
Of Course an initial investment of a wireless bridge is a must here. I got the LinkSys WET54G for less than a
hundred buck$. ( EBay )
1. start by connecting a computer to the bridge using a cable. Enter the SSID to the setup space provided for the bridge.
2. once the connected PC is working properly, write down the local IP addresses of the PC & the bridge.
3. disconnect PC & plug the bridge to the WAN port of the existing wireless router.
4. in the router setup page, select static IP address as the connection type. Then type in the IP of the bridge into the gateway field & the IP address of the PC in the internet IP field.
5. turn off your existing router's SSID broadcast ( if it was not already turned off... ). Enable wireless encryption.
(use highest cipher supported by the existing router). if the choices are limited to WEP & WPA, choose the latter. then type in some real 0b$cUr3 SSID into each of the PC connected.
6. final step is setup your vista or XP in the PC to connect to the router.
7. if you find this tutorial helpful, send your contribution to a homeless shelter, or children's hospital charitable funds
