I'm considering (finally) replacing my CRT monitor with an LCD. I found this cheap (in the USA) LCD monitor made by Samsung, that is about $288 (free shipping and after rebate). It is 1600x1200 native resolution at 20 inch and with 5 msec reposne time. Contrast ratio is 800:1 and it has height and tilt adjustments. Model number is 204B black color. Here is how it is posted on newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001226
I just wonder if any of you know about this specific LCD monitor or have other better/similar in mind I can compare with?

Thanks in advance.

that one looks pretty good - there are lots on the market though so have a look round, but samsung are a good make for lcd screens.

Can you suggest a few examples that are 20 inch and 1600x1200 resolution for US$300?

Thanks,

Tham

For around $300 there are a couple - when i said lots on the market i meant just lcd displays - i have the dell 2005fpw widescreen myself which is pretty cheap but if you definitely want a 4:3 display at 1600x1200 there is a viewsonic and an aoc model, but as i'm british i'm not too sure how this rebate thing works so you might be better off with the samsung - just make sure you read the customer reviews for any you like and you'll be fine. There does seem to be more choice for that size over here though...

Widesvreen is cheaper than 4:3 for same number of inches. Viewsonic is an expensive (at least US$150 more) but good display. The point is that Samsung offers such a display at such a price, but from reviews I read on newegg.com, its a luck issue if you get a good display or end up getting a bad one. I guess they do not invest much in testing, and they offer them as is out of the oven. Rebate is simple writing to the addfress provided in a usual rebate form, attaching the proof that you bough the item and the date this was (most rebates are limited by date range), and you get a check after few weeks back. Simple. I preffer buying without such rebate, and the rebate industry hopes not all people will claim the rebate as they are lazy, but it does work. The offered $60 rebate is good money of course, for this display.
I do not know the AOC model, and costs, do you have a pointer?

Thanks,

Tham

Go check out http://www.hannsg.com/us/
Best LCD monitors around by a long shot!
Screw worrying about your resolution, brightness rating is far more important

And what is so good about their brightness? 250cd/m2 vs. Samsung's 300cd/m2? 19inch is their biggest monitor, and of course not at 1600x1200. There are many other 19inch cheaper and better than hannsg. Contrast Ratio also not that good (and for smaller size screen) at 700:1 vs. 800:1. So what am I missing here?

I bought mine a couple of months ago. I got it from a sale. It was an "Acer" monitor (Made in China) for about $280

Can you provide more info, such as model number and a link to the place you have bought this from?
Thanks,

Tham

16.7mill colors, true 8bit color depth and 5ms for under 300, nice.

Samsung are always good at LCDs...I personally have 2 DELL 20.1" widescreens, they are excelent :)

Thanks guys and DDJ for your comments, I went ahead and bought one, at under US$280, including shipping. They have "specials" sometimes, when I bought mine. they had a $15 instant rebate, in adition to a $60 mail in rebate, and free shipping.
DDJ: note that 20 inch wide screen is not the same area as 20 inch with a 4:3 aspect ratio. The 20 inch wide screen is cheaper, vs a 4:3 usually.

Will let you know how it goes when I get it.

Got it! No dead pixels. No ghosting at high movements. Very nice colors! This is awsome I sure recommand you getting it. Don't look farther just buy it, you will not regret!

lagging

downside of lcds for me is the native res thing. for that u will need a very powerful GPU to get the best image at 1600*1200.
