Blu-ray Movies Hit Stores Today

Entertainment (SPHE). Blu-ray is locked in a format battle with HD DVD for dominance as the primary means of delivering packaged, high-def entertainment.

Sony, SPHE's parent company, of course resolutely supports Blu-ray Disc, backing the format in its consumer electronics, gaming (PlayStation 3), and storage divisions. SPHE carries its own cachet: The company has one of the largest and most enviable film libraries in existence--particularly if you also count MGM Studios, in which Sony has a stake, among its ranks. The titles launching today are: 50 First Dates, The Fifth Element, Hitch, House of Flying Daggers, The Terminator, Underworld Evolution, and XXX. Next week, Ultraviolet will be the studio's first Blu-ray title released at the same time as the DVD-only version. SPHE plans to release four catalog titles each month (by the fourth quarter of 2006, the company expects to be releasing up to ten titles per month); in addition, it plans to release new titles simultaneously with their DVD counterparts.

Samsung officially launches its BD-P1000 Blu-ray Disc player on June 25. Sony's Blu-ray player, the BDP-S1, is due out in August. Both are expected to cost $1000.

They never learn, remember the war between Betamax and VHS format Sony vs. JVC? Here we go again. The result is that consumers will wait and buy none, or use the internet to download movies (Xvid is pretty good). Its all in your eyes and ears of course, if that 1080p HDTV resultion looks so much better on a 60 inch DLP TV vs. your humble $450 32 inch CRT TV with only a 480i resolution. If you don't have the svreens to see it, the extra resolution is just wasted. I do not go into the difference to the eye between those higher resolutions and if it merits the much higher price. I stay with the good ol DVD format. Cheap and plenty. And a few XVID players of course can do well too

The only thing i care about is the cheaper prices. I think at the end of the day the cheapest will win, as they both have great features. The only problem from the consumre point of view is that dvd quality is so good already that unless you do have an absolutely huge screen you won't see the benefits, and even then only some people would appreciate the gain over the great quality of dvd releases.

What are the prices of Blu ray disks?! I've never seen any one of those babies and I can't imagine how good will the quality be...We use 4.7 GB DVDs and they are wonderful how about 100 and 200 GB movies :smile:

I wouldn't say Sony were on the Betamax side this time

All you have to do is look at the PC burners....There are NO HD-DVD burners out yet, but there are a ton of blu-ray burners.

Sony will always be on the loosing side unless they change their whole attitude towards their consumers. Sony considers their customers as the enemy. This is why they infect us with rootkits when we buy their CDs. This is why you can’t buy a Sony digital camera that uses an SD card. This is also why it took so long for Sony DVD players to incorporate MP3 playback ability.

I had the opportunity to see a Samsung Blu-ray in action. It sucked! In fact it was so bad that I actually ejected the disc to verify that it was actually a Blu-ray disc. There was a HDDVD unit playing next to it and the difference was like night and day. I’m hoping that it was just their setup that was bad for the Blu-ray. I will reserve final judgment until I see other setups, but it’s looking bad for Blu-ray.

I used to be a big Sony fanboy in the past, but not anymore. Ever since they moved the production of most of their consumer products offshore their quality control has sucked.
