All these years I was using Kazaa (lite and later revolution) and LimeWire.
And I was told that both clients use Gnutella but what sets them apart is the fact that LimeWire uses another network that Kazaa doesn't and vice versa.

I've decided to do away with Kazaa once and for all , but I want to find a suitable replacement, I wish someone could explain a laic like about the different networks , not including of course ed2k and kad.

I'm talking about mp3s of course.

i did a google search for you and was able to find some info on torrents and filesharing networks. It listed 5 things that stood out.
# BitTorrent networking is NOT a publish-subscribe model like Kazaa; instead, BitTorrent is true Peer-Peer networking where the users do the actual file serving.
# Torrents enforce quality control by filtering out corrupted and dummy files, ensuring that downloads contain only what they claim to contain.
# Torrents actively encourage users to share (“seed”) their complete files, while punishing users who "leech".
# BitTorrent can achieve download speeds over 1500 kilobits per second.
# BitTorrent code is open-source, advertising-free, and adware/spyware-free. This means that no single person profits from BitTorrent's success.

if you want to read more go to http://netforbeginners.about.com/od/peersharing/a/torrenthandbook.htm it talks about how torrents work and differ. Im not sure if this is wat u were looking for but i hope it helps.

I know how bitorrent works , I didn't ask about bittorrent.

I wish somebody could list networks such as gnutella and its ilk and explain what clients use what network , with the exception of ed2k , kad and like i thought was clear , bitorrent.

You can try using Ares galaxy, it started as a gnutella client but then it developed its own network. Another option is Bearshare.
Both these clients use other networks than gnutella but they have the same concept. they have the same falls like viruses and downloading files and then seeing they were aatually some other file.

Another option is using DC (Direct connect), you can find the same things (and even more) and you get AWSOME speeds. it operates a little different, you have to set files in sharing folder in order to connect to hubs (lets say small network) every hub has demands for the sharing size usually 1-10GB (many hubs set 1GB as minimal sharing size) but some hubs require 25-100GB of share.
you connect to hubs (you can connect to as many hubs as you like - till you computer crashes ;) - ) and you search for files and you can download. its a really great app, try it and you won't be disappointed. its more reliable since it has hasing system (called TTH) etc... you'll find in this forum more about DC just do a search
